Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

6 medium-sized Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

2 tbsp lemon juice

1 tbsp all-purpose flour (to thicken)

For the Crisp Topping:

1 cup rolled oats

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans, optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, lemon juice, and the tablespoon of flour. Toss well until the apples are fully coated. Transfer the mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Make the Crisp Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Stir the mixture until well combined. Drizzle the melted butter over the oat mixture and mix with a fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If using, stir in the chopped nuts for added crunch.

Assemble the Crisp: Evenly spread the oat topping over the apple filling in the baking dish, ensuring all the apples are covered.

Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the apple crisp in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.

Serve: Once baked, remove the crisp from the oven and let it cool for about 10-15 minutes. Serve warm, on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious contrast!
